Nancy Polikoff, a professor of law at the American University Washington College of Law, undergoes the exposure the very current topic of 'marriage rights' that largely has been regarded by the general public as the battle between same sex and different sex marriage.

This area, which there is very little equality or respect, has had attention from the media, and the public. Polikoff addresses the inequalities of human rights from an angle that allows every reader to become involved in what defines a "family".

This compelling debate for why married couples, gay or straight, should not receive special rights denied to others.  Beyond (Straight and Gay) Marriage grapples with an urgent topic, marriage equality, but also moves the discussion forward by focusing on the larger social and political issues of marriage and family law.

Often books on this subject of gay rights are often so distorted, that they end up throwing fire this charged and unpopular issue leaving the audience craving for equality under the law.  Same sex marriage goes against the radical rights beliefs and decry the idea of domestic partnership as a sin or immoral. Polikoff recognizes this split and in her instinctive mode of writing poses examples of people whose rights have been denied by social policies and stigma, and those conflicts result from the definition of "parent", and even rights for visitation in hospitals when the allowed visitors are family. Why must the label 'marriage' be the deciding factor in units of loving people whose potential for and production of caring homes be the norm?

In what will justify become a cogent resource for sociological studies, Polikoff has chosen to make this carefully researched and documented book as reader friendly as possible. The general public would greatly benefit from reading her concepts in hopes of increasing the understanding and appreciation of the shift of the concept of "family" today. Marriage is not the real dividing line and Polikoff asserts in this provocative statement for valuing all kinds of family.

This book is important for all of us regardless of sexual orientation or family situation and I would suggest that everyone should read it.
